Thinking about working with a health coach but not sure what to expect? Let me pull back the curtain on the experience so you know exactly what happens when we begin our work together.
As a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, my approach is probably different from what you might expect—in the best possible way.
When you decide to begin coaching with me, you’ll receive a welcome packet with several important documents:
These documents help us both prepare for a productive first session, ensuring we make the most of our time together.
Our first session typically lasts about an hour. This isn’t a typical healthcare appointment where you’re given a diagnosis and treatment plan. Instead, it’s a deep, meaningful conversation centered around YOU.
Here’s what we’ll explore:
One client came to me struggling with consistent exercise. Instead of giving her a workout plan, I asked: “Tell me about a time when you really enjoyed moving your body.”
She recalled how much she loved dancing in college—how alive and connected it made her feel. This sparked a conversation about joy in movement rather than obligation. By the end of our session, she had decided to try dance classes again.
The solution came from within her, not from me—and that made all the difference in her motivation and follow-through.
When change feels like something you “should” do, it’s draining. When it becomes something you genuinely “want” to do because it connects with what matters most to you, it’s energizing.
That’s the difference motivational interviewing makes. Instead of pushing against resistance (which only makes it stronger), we roll with it, explore it, and transform it from within.
In our coaching sessions, you might hear me ask questions like:
We’ll start by discussing what optimal health and wellbeing means to YOU. Not what a magazine, influencer, or even your doctor thinks it should look like—but what truly matters in YOUR life.
Questions we might explore:
We’ll review the Wheel of Health exercise you completed, identifying areas where you’re thriving and areas where you’d like to see change. This holistic view helps us see patterns and connections you might not have noticed before.
Rather than trying to change everything at once (which rarely works), we’ll identify one or two areas where you feel most ready and motivated to begin. This focused approach leads to early wins that build momentum for bigger changes.
The most powerful motivation comes from within. We’ll dig deep into why these changes matter to you—connecting them to your core values, relationships, and life purpose.
Together, we’ll craft a compelling vision of what success looks like for you. This isn’t just about goals and metrics—it’s about how you want to feel, what you want to experience, and who you want to be.
If you’ve worked with health professionals before, you might be surprised by:
Following our initial meeting, we’ll typically schedule a second full session to further develop your wellness plan and establish specific, achievable steps.
After these two foundational sessions, we’ll move into ongoing coaching sessions (usually 30-45 minutes) where we’ll:
Health and wellness coaching is ideal if:
The clients who benefit most are those ready to be active participants in their wellness journey—not passive recipients of someone else’s plan.
